Antiques

Antiques can be found in every barrio of Buenas Aires. But, the main location for serious shoppers is this street, Calle Defensa which is lined with eclectic, high quality antique shops. The time to come to this street is on a Sunday, when the outdoor antiques fair, Fiera de San Pedro Telmo, is held in Plaza Dorrego only two blocks down Calle Defensa. So, here we are on a Sunday at the west end of Calle Defensa, ready to dive into some serious antiques (and other stuff).

A panorama of the north side of the street. Photos below will show some of the shops.

How about old racing cars and police cycles??

Side mini malls contain lots of off street shops.

Look through the reflection...

Deco art and fixtures.

After two blocks of Calle Defensa we come to the Plaza Dorrego.

And the first thing we find is a tango show. Great band (we bought two of their CDs), and a fun show. Donations only.

The plaza is full of vendor's stands offering antique goodies as well as crafts.

A little of everything.

It is starting to rain now, so we head for shelter.

Surprisingly, we found this market right behind the Plaza Dorrego. The Mercado Sam Telmo is the farmers market for the Barrio of San Telmo.

Inside is a real farmers market. The building is an old victorian cast iron structure. It has four big additions which offer some more antique stuff.

This is one of the added wings. Plenty of old records going back to the early 1900s. Lots of old posters and memorabilia. Once the rain eases up, we take a run back up Calle Defensa and grab a cab back to our hotel.

Last look through a Calle Defensa window. That Louis the 15th display case on the right is really a beauty.
